4 Islanders for Sale...

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin »

Green Goblin Airways....
Britten-Norman has acquired all nine of the turboprop Islanders it delivered to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the 2000s, and plans to refurbish and sell them on to civil operators.

The BN2T-4S variants, powered by twin Rolls-Royce M250-B17Fs, served in a surveillance role in the UK and several overseas missions from 2004, under the Defender 4000 designation.

The BN2T-4S has an extended fuselage compared with the standard Islander, giving it an extra 1m (3.3ft) of cabin length. A larger wing – wingspan is 16.2m (53ft) compared with the standard Islander’s 14.9m – accommodates more fuel, giving it a visual flight rules range of over 1,000nm (1,860km).

The Hampshire-based manufacturer says the aircraft can be equipped for tasks such as medevac, search and rescue, aerial survey and policing operations.

It adds that the MoD aircraft were delivered new and have been maintained by Britten-Norman. Most have flown less than 10% of a typical operational life of 40,000h, says the company.

Although Britten-Norman will market the aircraft, they will also be offered under government-to-government agreements through the MoD’s Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA).

Britten-Norman chief executive William Hynett says the BN2T-4S “brings a different offering to our customers”, retaining the Islander’s short take-off and landing capabilities with “a larger cabin for increased passenger comfort”.

He adds that “the opportunity to work with DESA to derive mutual benefit in any sales is an added bonus”.

The aircraft were originally used in NI in a surveillance role. I believe they are being replaced (in the surveiilance role) by the Shadow R1 (Beech 300) aircraft operated by 14 Squadron from RAF Waddington.

https://www.raf.mod.uk/aircraft/shadow-r1/
CAPABILITY
The Shadow’s electro-optical and electronic capabilities complement those of the Sentinel R.Mk 1, its data combining with that gathered by Sentinel and other platforms to help analysts prepare comprehensive intelligence product. Satellite communications links enable information download during a mission and the aircraft is also fitted with a comprehensive defensive aids suite.

No. Want one of my own. Must have a proper engine though. Not one of those whirry things. Have heard that the whirry ones are a bugger to synchronise.

A 'proper engine?' :-\

According to an article I have which may (not) have been published in a certain prestigious Aviation Journal, it refers to the Islander with Lycoming Piston engines.....

"...One of the outstanding features of Islander technology has always been the ability to take an engine which, when mounted in any other airframe known to the free world produces a low vibration, quiet harmonious ride and cause it to continually shake and batter the airframe, desynch with the accompanying engine and create a din; something as one might imagine could be made by 50 skeletons fornicating in an aluminium dustbin...." =)) =))

If you think that's bad, you need to try sitting in the back row of a Trislander from Sumburgh to Embra!

I did a couple of hundred hours in Trislanders across Cook Strait. They were much quieter for the driver, further ahead of the prop arc. Never rode in the back, but can imagine under the centre engine it would be quite noisy. They were very good for the job they were designed for, each seat row having it's own door, very quick turnarounds when you had regular pax who knew the routine. The wing loading a lot higher than the Islander, handled the severe turbulence that could be encountered across Cook Strait much better than the Islander in the fleet. Had some interesting rides giving type ratings to aspiring drivers, pull the centre engine on T/O, no assymetric thrust, but obviously something wrong. And a good set of paying seats for a single pilot operation.

The Islanders are not the only bits of kit that are up for sale.

For sale - carefully driven by a little old lady on Sundays to go to church.

I'll take one of each and maybe several each of the guns.
The fast patrol boat would be good as a live-aboard ski boat.
