Dexter RIP
Dexter had been gradually declining for three weeks but for his last four days he had refused his usual food and spent every day asleep, not even barking when the Postie arrived. The Vet gave hin a check up a week ago and did blood tests etc but they were all okay and she said he was a good age and that we might have to make a decision soon. We managed to get a little fish and brown rice into him each day but on Thursday it was obvious that he was not going to recover. We called the Vet and in the afternoon Dexter peacefully crossed Rainbow Bridge. He was 12 years and 4 months old, so around the average for a Labrador. Mrs C16 and I are devastated and the tears have flowed freely - he was such a loyal, intelligent and lovable friend who is greatly missed.

My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.

I'm sure that Dexter appreciated the good life you both provided him with.

Re: Dexter RIP
I would like to add my condolences. Dogs and cats - especially - are family members, and to lose one is very upsetting, whether they walk on two legs or four.

Re: Dexter RIP
So sad. At least you had time to nurse him to the end. We had one that we bred, the older, and two others (the next generation) when the older started on the path.
She would fit and the others were clearly distressed. I used to hold her while this went on. When she recovered you could see she was confused, yet she seemed to be aware and grateful for the care.
Very sad when they do go however

Re: Dexter RIP
You have my sympathies. Having had to to this a few years ago is why we don't have a dog anymore. I couldn't face the distress of having to do it a second time.

Re: Dexter RIP
Thanks for the posts - this was our second Labrador and we lost the first one at 8 years old to cancer. We have decided not to have another as with our increasing age and possible increasing mobility issues it wouldn’t be fair on the dog….. plus we don’t think we can cope again with the heartache of loss.

Condolences, it is always hard to lose a member of the family, irrespective of the number of legs they have.
