Once, hand luggage only, I was selected for a random search at Inverness. I think I only had a sponge bag, dirty shirt etc and nothing else. Having been searched they said my bag would go in the hold.
If course the worse thing to do is travel with an empty case. At Luton it was clearly broken. They were very good, a new one was delivered the following day.
