Not a good photo, a copy from a 45 year old 124 format slide, but I have a personal connection with the aircraft which had a bad ending shortly after I flew on it.
The photo was taken in around June 1978 at Kariba (If I remember correctly) when myself and family were returning to the UK from South Africa and made a side trip to see Victoria Falls. The aircraft, VP-WAS, was shot down only a few weeks later, on 3rd Sept of that year by 'freedom fighters', killing most of the 52 on board.

John; A lovely photo of an old Classic! A question though; Is that A/C the one that was rather nastily nicknamed `The ChunderBox?`
I remember my now Late Father telling me of one A/C used in early Aviation that had a nasty habit of the Fuselage doing a yawing/rolling movement when in even light turbulence, which caused any passengers aft of the wings to become rather unwell. Cannot now remember the name of the A/C.

You only live twice. Once when you're born. Once when you've looked death in the face.

I cannot imagine a DH89 behaving in that manner!

Pinky, am I correct in thinking youflew in the Cairns/FNQ area in the past? if so, you may know of Percy Tresize. I remember hearing about him flying a DH89 while a passenger gave birth to a baby.

The story of this crash is quite horrendous. I remember researching it for the book. From Aviation Safety Network: The aircraft was shot down by an SA-7 surface-to-air missile. The aircraft crash-landed, striking an irrigation ditch, cart-wheeled, broke up and caught fire. Fighters from the Zimbabwe Peoples Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA), also responsible for shooting down the airliner, later killed 10 of the 18 survivors. The rest of the survivors were rescued the next day.Smeagol wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:45 pmNot a good photo, a copy from a 45 year old 124 format slide, but I have a personal connection with the aircraft which had a bad ending shortly after I flew on it.
