My sock drawer - a portal to a parallel universe?

#1 Post by OFSO » Sun Jun 18, 2023 9:43 am

An inexplicable incident. Firstly, from the matching pairs of socks Mrs OFSO bought me last year, only two pairs remain. The others are now all singletons. No explanation of where the missing socks have gone.
But now the big mystery. The year before Covid, I bought two different pairs - four socks - at a Turkish stall in Spittalfields market. One pair (purple with alien heads) is in the UK. The other pair is in my sock drawer in Spain. Very distinctive, ochre background with small black scorpions. Found the pair this morning. Only not a pair! There are three socks, identical, ochre with scorpions. I called Mrs OFSO. "You were there when I bought these: how many did I buy ? " She replied 'one pair, two socks, plus the other horrible purple ones I hate."
The scorpion socks stand out in my sock drawer. I have worn them over the years. There were only ever a pair. Now there are one and a half pairs..

Not content with stealing socks, the one-legged bastard is now starting to play tricks on you.

My super efficient laundry lady always pairs my socks up after she has got them off the line. However I only wear socks (and trousers) a few times a year for official meetings. Currently mid winter's day in shorts and bare feet.

I also have a strange sock drawer! It winds Mrs 1DC up like a dose of salts and instead of keeping her nose out she is always interfering. Whenever she gets near it I am instructed to rid myself of the majority of the contents, this I do to keep the peace. Somehow the contents never seem to reduce by many even though I am sure I put a load in the bin whenever instructed. Very strange..

Is it possible that all sock drawers everywhere - or many, or some - are connected by a hyperspace link so they can swap items between themselves? Or by a Black Hole? Some of mine certainly smell as if they have been through a black hole. Or should be in one.

When I was an apprentice Deck Officer in the MN I shared a cabin with another apprentice, once, who never washed his socks. He had six black pairs and wore a pair for a few days and then folded them and put them to the back of the drawer. He wore them again when they made it back to the front. His theory was that by then they would have stopped smelling! In the tropics he did the same with his white socks.
Fortunately he was quite good with his personal hygiene..

Not socks, but on Ark Royal I shared a cabin with three others, one of whom was the late and infamous A.G.L. He wore the 1960's equivalent of budgie smugglers and each one had a different day of the week imprinted on the rear and he never wore them out of order.

The oddest thing: fetched a fresh hand towel for the bathroom and on top of the pile was one I don't remember seeing before - not mine, and I don't remember it being my mother's. I don't even like it...

The ones below were all familar.

I buy a package of 12 identical pairs at Costco for $15. As individual socks develop holes or disappear the herd gets smaller but never a pair missing.
Wash, rinse, dry, repeat...

I am suffering an invasion of yellow socks, I had two pairs and now I have four! Mrs 1DC denies any involvement advising the last thing she would ever do is buy me socks, arrange to reduce the pile yes increase it no. Very odd!! Due to the weather I have not worn a pair of socks for a fortnight.

SKECHERS and other copycat shoe companies are advertising their new offerings that are easy to put on or take off without bending over. All of the ads tout the benefits of not having to bend over.
All of the aads show the people using the shoes wearing socks but don't address how they get the socks on. :-o :-? :ymdevil:

I can put my own shoes on but cannot tie my own laces. I haven't come across an automatic lace tier yet although I do have boots that show a tied lace but are actually secured by pulling zips up the sides. Unfortunately my hands are not strong enough now to pull the zip up! I cannot put my own socks on and one of these days I will buy a sock putter onner. The trouble is when you look on the big river or similar the choice is large and I always assume I will pick the wrong one!
