No vid this week-end, but have made steady progress along several fronts.

Viewed the Colour of Magic movie and took photos of the Luggage as depicted there.

These show the shape of the lid and the arrangement of the external metal bands, hinges and lock.

I made progress on the design of the lid, with special attention to assembly sequence, so that it will line up as well as possible with the chest.

At the back of the chest I inserted a goodly chunk of hard balsa to accept the hinge screws and spread the hinge loads.

Will be needing more balsa and cement, so am now awaiting delivery of same.

Love it - anyway that could be motorised Henry. Would make a good prop for upcoming Halloween.

Thanks Tom, I did look at motorising but chickened out. Worries included weight, centre of gravity, and reduction ratio. I have a motorised quadruped model waiting to be built, that is more robust and capable of carrying electrickery. Billy the Bug is booked for Hallowe'en this year, The Luggage is pencilled in for October 2016, Deo Volente.

It's a fascinating mechanism Henry, something particularly mesmerising about the motion. I hadn't come across it until you posted previously on the larger versions walking across the beach.

The problem I had was getting enough sapient pearwood. I ended up using wise old oak.

A fallen branch from the yew tree in the wizzards' graveyard can yield useful material, but beware of collecting it when the shadow of the Unseen Tower of Art is in AshkEnte.

The shape of the lid in the upper photo is remarkably similar to what ol' henry sketched before seeing the movie, in fact the adjustment to the drawings is only a mm or two.

Just as a small challenge, can anyone derive a formula and deduce the radius of curvature required for the model lid. The model chest is 175mm wide and the shape has to be the same as in the photo.
