My Great Uncle Bert emigrated to Australia from the UK when he was 16 in 1907. He joined the Australian Army at the outbreak of war and fought at Gallipoli. He survived that and died in Winton, Queensland, in 1964.

Just one more Anzac Day report, rather a touching video at this one from Wanaka:

News this morning that the baggage of the NZ contingent to the Gallipoli ceremony was lost in Dubai, including uniforms and musical instruments. The Australian contingent helped out where they could, but the NZ bugler had only 10 minutes to practise playing the Last Post on a borrowed cornet.

Given that I have to drink lots of water, I'm quite pleased to only have to get up twice per night, without the mad urgency that I did have.

Morning folks. Sunny, 30s expected. Awaiting CCTV technician. Only U/S for 2 months now. He wouldn't come until I proved that I had paid for the new power unit. I find it very insulting. First lorry load of grass for the thatching arrived yesterday. Four more to come. it is going to take up to a month to complete. A big mess is expected. There was mess left after the delivery. They are going to learn very fast that this is not the way things are done here. [-X

Been away for a few days so catching up best wishes to all those who need it.
Mrs 1DC and I went to Gallipoli two years ago, not only was it a privilege to go there but we were very impressed with the amount of money that's been spent on the place and how well it is looked after. It is considered to be the birthplace of the modern Turkish nation of course.Mrs 1DC's GrandDad was wounded there, his boat was being towed ashore and took a direct shell hit and he woke up on a hospital ship. He spent nearly a year in hospital back in the UK.His Regiment went on to win a load of VC's but a lot of them never made it back to Blighty...Some of the trenches were hardly the length of a rifle apart.
We took my 95 year old neighbour to Shrewsbury to see his young sister for a few days and had a very nice time, they have a different climate over there, it stopped raining as we got to the M1 and started again as we got off it on the way back! 15 miles of the M1 entailed a 50MPH speed restriction due to road works controlled by speed cameras. They had signs up saying they were working to install new safety improvements and were also working nightshifts to ensure a speedy conclusion! On the way down we didn't see anyone working and on the way back we only saw one chap doing some strimming of a grass verge! Four lanes of traffic, nose to tail doing 50MPH though!!

Well lookit, we have had a little frost, can see a rime on the cars parked across the street and a tinge of frost on the lawn.
Has been -0.3°C, above freezing now, expecting 17°C and a very clear sunny day (sun not yet in sight).

Gusty north wind, sunny spells here.
No wind and sun, feels like +12, working in t-shirt.
30 seconds later, sun goes behind clouds and big gusts, feels like -12. Almost freeze to death before getting fleece and toque on.

Good morning all, nice autumn day with a little cloud around. Currently 13C, forecast max 21C.
Feeling much better this morning, may be getting rid of the cough at last.
Last night we both felt like a good Chinese meal, which we haven't had for years since our local closed. Ordered from another one not far away that we've seen but never ordered from. Should have done so earlier. Their on-line ordering system was easy & non-clunky. Pick-up time was accurate and the food was plentiful and excellent. The restaurant is huge, and was almost full, mainly with asian people, always a good sign with a Chinese restaurant.

Our 18 month drought may have ended: a week of rain and storms forecast. Plan InundCat activated for inundations in Catalunia.

Morning folks. Broken cloud but warm. We are worried about our pod of hippos. Apart from two who wandered past the other day they are nowhere to be seen. Just seen this article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/2 ... t-botswana

They are culling cattle here. Makes our brown garden seem irrelevant.

That's very sad, Ex-A. I hope your hippos turn out to be OK or can bee relocated.
Productive day today, emptied the compost bin & spread it on the garden. Will mulch the garden tomorrow, all being well.

Had a pleasant afternoon with our little community choir doing a fund-raiser for the local parish church. Heating needs replacing. (SInce the blokes sing in trousers and white shirts only I can attest to the truth of the above... got home four hours ago and only just warmed up fully.)

But love to sing with this lot. Even though the altos behave like we're a cheap hotel: they come in when they like, and never worry much about the key.

Here it is 14 c at 10 am and the sun is battling to scare off the fog which was not that heavy, correction the sun has just been declared the
winner, it is starting to dry the towels I had just hung out.

Good morning all, clear blue sky here, currently 20C, forecast max 24C, Early dash to hardware hell to get a replacement screen door closer before the rush. Success. Watered the garden and now about to read the paper (ie do the crossword) before mulching the vege garden this afternoon.
