The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
Good morning all, clear blue skies (for the moment), currently 13C, forecast max 18C. No doctor appointments today, might take the camera for a walk in the bush.

It is apparently illegal in the state of New Mexico for a woman to pump her own fuel or change a tyre.
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
They don't have tyres in New Mexico.
They have llantas or tires.
PP
Even spellcheck rejects tyres.

When I took a party of schoolgirls to Florida 20 years ago, it was illegal in that State for women to skydive on Sundays. So we had to shift to Monday. I believe they have now rescinded that law.
Town ordinance are even more ridiculous. ISTR that there are State rules in the Rockies that require a certain number of baths a week, and towns within those states where baths are still forbidden.
As ever, these rules are almost never enforced, but are left on the books either through inertia, or because it allows the local police to get rid of people they don't like.
Certain other laws are oddly permissive, usually as a result of legal challenges that the local authorities wished to see succeed.
Thus, it is legal (in Florida I think) to tie an elephant up to a parking meter - but the fee must be paid - and women can mow the lawn (but do nothing else) topless in Maine.

A number of years ago the State of Georgia allowed local municipalities to vote on rescinding certain "Blue Laws".
One was that they would allow alcohol sales on Sundays in restaurants, but only if the alcohol sales made up less than 50% of total revenue.
One restaurateur stated having a band to entertain diners on Sunday nights. Much to his surprise he was cited by the police because live entertainment/dancing was against the law on Sundays.
Fortunately his lawyer noted that a law was still on the books that forbade unescorted women were not allowed in bars.
The owner then challenged the police to return to his establishment and cite all of the unescorted women therein.
The cops threw up their hands and said there was no way that they could do that citing discrimination laws.
The city council quickly rescinded that law and amend the law about live entertainment/dancing on Sundays.
If I remember correctly there was a law on the books against movies being show on Sundays but I believe tat that one was simply ignored.

I am pulling off all the trim from two windows which need replacing.
Underneath is a potted History of Canadian Wallcoverings of the Last 100 Years.
They never removed anything, just slapped more on top. One floor I did earlier had 18 layers.
Also included is a History of Canadian Fasteners: Nails, Screws, Pins, And, Well, Anything Else You Got, Boy - Them Horseshoe Nails Is Fine.

The Sun has risen, it is 2.3°C outside, expecting sunny and mostly clear all day and 13°C.
Duck-shooting season starts tomorrow and I see the forecast is for mist/fog first thing.

I hope there aren't any "Well, he looked like a duck to me" incidents.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
I recall one misty, hazy morning over the Straits of Gibraltar, when one of our crews decided to bounce what they thought was an enemy aircraft out searching for the fleet we were defending.
At the last second, the blob clarified into a submarine conning tower. They escaped by the skin of their teeth, really did need a change of flying suits, and the aircraft needed an excess-G check.
They were given the rest of the day off.

My BIL rang yesterday to inform us that his father's partner was in a hospice owing to bouts of falling and hurting herself, she is ok at present
but will not be allowed home as the falls are starting to become more frequent as of late. I don't think the hospice knows what they have done
by saying she should stay, Meryl is 102 years old and is still bright as a button, and I think by now they will be aware that she is feisty for a 102
year old.

Good morning all, cloudy with drizzle here today, currently 14C, forecast max 16C.
It used to be the law in NSW that on Sundays, alcohol could only be served "bona fide travellers", ie you had to have travelled 50 miles. Hence, there was a proliferation of pubs just over 50 miles from Sydney, and lots of accidents as drunks drove home.

My cousin and his then girlfriend drifted into a bar in Ireland on a Sunday.
The bar keeper drifted over and announced "I'm sorry, I can't serve you now, it's Holy Hour"
"Not a problem", they said, understanding.
A few minutes later, polishing a glass, he drifted back "Would ye like a drink while yer waiting?"

When I was a bartender in Idaho the law there was beer and wine only on Sundays.
Private parties for convention goers could be served hard liquor on Sundays.
Imagine their surprise when they came in the bar later on Sunday evening to be told "Sorry, beer and wine only".
"But, but, but, you served me cocktails an hour ago at the party."
Quirk in the law.
The municipalities were allowed to vote on extending last call from 1AM
to 2AM on a case by case basis.
The resort towns were all for it to increase revenue.
When the law was enacted it was discovered that only spirits were allowed to be sold during the extra hour. Beer and wine were not explicitly included so once again there was some red faces and scrambling to rewrite and pass an amended law.

Morning all. It would appear we have sun today. Very welcome, as I'm trying to make the last of the logs in the stack suffice until autumn when I'll buy another trailer full. Spain always warm ? Bah, humbug.
How's the thatching going ?
