Knockers

No, not that. I am looking for a knocker for my front door. It has to be a vertically hanging one fitting on a jamb 2" (50mm) wide. I'd like it to be aeronautically themed. A miniature joystick, 2-bladed prop... Any ideas?

Well, I was thinking of something more relevant to the aircraft than to the pilot.

When in Spain, we work with local foundries. They can cast pretty well anything from anything, and a plastic kit of your chosen aircraft could be made up in bronze and welded to an existing knocker. Just a matter of time and money...

Thanks, OFSO, so a scale model of Concorde about 50mm wide at the end of the wings, would be about 120mm long, just about right. Make a hinge under the nose and the fin could be the handle, I'll have a look for a suitable Dinky or whatever.

We are off to the local foundry next Tuesday but this time not for a bronze cast. Mrs OFSO wants them to scan a piece, scale it up in size, cut it out of foam on their new 3D cutter and cover it in epoxy as a skin.

My experience with foundries here in Catalunia is they love a challenge. Unfortunately their affirmations that they can do something, while always eventually correct, frequently take longer than they think. But not that expensive given the work involved.

We have tons of foundries round here, so getting castings done is not a problem, nor is turnround time, but I've just found a model Concorde about the right size in diecast, which looks pretty good in the BA livery. If I can add a bit of weight to make it knock better, it might do as it stands.

Might be made of unobtainium, casting metal. Have it done in bronze, it will survive massive knockers (something to be divinely hoped for).

Started me thinking! Perhaps a cast of a Frenchman as the static part, with a bar of soap as the knocker. Would not offend any French visitors as they wouldn't recognise it.

Talking of door knockers, I have always wanted a door knocker based upon the scene in Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' where Scrooge's door knocker morphs into a horrifying gargoyle resembling Marley's tormented face. I had a copy of the novel when I was a child and used find myself transfixed by the beautifully drawn but horrifying image of the door knocker in the book.

‘Scrooge, having his key in the lock of the door, saw in the knocker, without its undergoing any intermediate process of change—not a knocker, but Marley’s face. It was not in impenetrable shadow as the other objects in the yard were, but had a dismal light about it, like a bad lobster in a dark cellar. It was not angry or ferocious, but looked at Scrooge as Marley used to look: with ghostly spectacles turned up on its ghostly forehead. The hair was curiously stirred, as if by breath or hot air; and, though the eyes were wide open, they were perfectly motionless. That, and its livid colour, made it horrible; but its horror seemed to be in spite of the face and beyond its control, rather than a part of its own expression.

As Scrooge looked fixedly at this phenomenon, it was a knocker again.‘...

Mrs OFSO can sculpt your face and then get that cast with bolts on back to go thru door, add knocker to front and there we are.

Thanks for the suggestion, John. I have a bid in on ebay for a Concorde the right scale, to either use as is, or take a casting from. If I don't win that I'll have a hunt for a throttle lever and quadrant.

There are videos of how to make castings of 3D printed models. The files can be found at Thingiverse and Cults3D, among others. The foundry people are likely to already know all about it and have a printer at hand.
