Here they have only started falling in large numbers in the last week or so, most shedders still have about 70% of their leaves

Still 18 degrees here for the next couple of days, and no frost to speak of, so we get just about the longest Fall here. Very good for spuds too!

Here in Bots most of the deciduous trees hang onto their leaves until spring; now is leaf raking season before they rapidly grow new foliage. Strange but true! :-o

Autumn comes a bit later here. Trees are still in mostly full foliage but the big shedding will arrive. That's a lot of bio-mass falling. Surprised someone has not come up with something efficient to use it for, in urban areas at least.

Just heard a commotion outside; our staff with housekeepers brother and 4X4X4 ie cart and 4 donkey's were outside. Goat manure from them for the garden was swapped for our old fridge; and all their stuff and fridge fitted perfectly into the cart :D Everyone was happy apart from the donkey's who have to work in 38 degrees :((

This afternoon I have been mainly making Christmas cakes. :) (under extremely close supervision by Senior Management)

I thought it went quite well although there was one sniffy moment when I likened the process to mixing concrete. :D :D

Does one traditionally make Christmas cakes the same day as Christmas puddings, Stir up Sunday. Last Sunday before Advent? One needs to know these things.

Perhaps our ship's Chaplains could advise.

Dunno, I thought we would traditionally make ours in October so I can feed them with loads of Brandy. =p~

I would have thought that would be a little late and not allow due festering and inoculation time, but then I like a cake that fails the breathalyser.

Well, the fruit bits have already had just over a quarter of a pint of Brandy and I can assure you all that there will be plenty more added in the interest of staving off any dryness. ;)

As Wod says, one needs considerable festering and inoculation time (well expressed, sir) for Christmas Cakes. Detection of dryness roundabout mid-November is a very good reason for finding something to remedy same.

Making of puds too early, however, often results in an unacceptable degree of stodginess. Perhaps not so much when one cooks in pudding basin these days, but in the days of the traditional round ones about the size of a football, in cloth, puds needed careful management.
Me old gran became a pud-contractor during the 39-45 shambles. Married to a master butcher, she had access to seeming-infinite supplies of suet, which she traded for other essential stuffs, then produced shelves-full of semi-edible large brown things whose sale presumably helped to fund Christmas dinner. (Being an urchin at the time, I didn't pay much attention. But I do remember the shelves and contents.)

In the land where I grew up (Long Island shortly after the end of WWII), the streets were lined with old maple trees which shed their leaves all over the streets, sidewalks and front lawns.

The neighbors would rake them into piles alongside the curb and burn them. The smell was pleasant and neighbors enjoyed leaning on their rakes to watch the embers and exchange gossip. The next rain would dispose of leftover ash.

Then government banned the practice. Now, those who bother rake them into huge piles of plastic bags which are then picked up by fuel burning dump trucks and deposited in landfills.

I seriously wonder whether the environment is helped by this change.

Talking of Fish and Chips in the food hall of our local mall someone had ordered a fried egg to
go on top of their fish 8-} Now SWMBO says I have strange tastes in food but even I had never
even thought about doing that. A neighbour tells me it's common here in NZ - so it's true then I
can learn something new every day.
