A good article. No mention of Scotland even though the National Grid stretches as far north as Orkney. In 26 years here I've only seen a helicopter patrol our nearby 275kV National Grid line on three occasions and that has always been a hired in machine from PLM Helicopters in Inverness and not one of their own - and probably when they were trying to find a fault that had occurred. When CEGB started helicopter patrolling of their lines in the 60's they used one Hiller 12E helicopter piloted by a guy named Spencer - can't remember his surname. How times have changed.
