Broadband

#1 Post by OFSO » Thu Sep 07, 2023 5:27 pm

After years of 1mb for €74 a month from Moviestar, a G4 router that depends on no tourists hogging the network, tomorrow we get fibre, 300mb plus mobile phone for €35 a month from Girona Fibre. I have drilled the wall already for the optic cable. We shall see.....

You'll probably find that their installation rules require them to drill a hole.

Verizon and Cox have each torn up the streets in my neighborhood to thread fiber cable. Verizon also dug up sidewalks to bury boxes to contain nodes.
One of my neighbors had a portion of his yard dug up to accommodate one. Only problem...they went outside of the right of way and he made them dig it up and restore his yard,
I haven't looked at Cox's pricing but if it is anywhere close to the cost of their cable service it will be expensive.

Installation rules? What are they? If there is a pre-existing entrance to the house they will use it.

Cables not buried under the ground. Why? Can't. Granite.

Three hours to string fibre. Had to go via roof to clear road. Tidy installation and fibre right into house, not last hundred metres copper wire as so often. Broadband not as much as expected on test, but still five times higher than Moviestar. Noticably faster on phone.

Working since last night. Wildely differing results from the Speed Test program run on either of the two Redmi phones, the Hauwei tablet or the PC, ranging from 3 to 300Mb. In every case however better than Moviestars pathetic 1Mb. TV reception improved amazingly.

Presumably you are quoting wired speed checks and not wireless?

Noticeably faster on phone.
Can you still understand what people are saying when they speak? - or is it garbled?

When we moved to this remote island (Stronsay, Orkney) in 2004 we were still on BT dial-up but primitive broadband in the form of the BT "frog" arrived a year or so later. Because of the island's telephone exchange we were never going to get anywhere near the theoretical max of 7.5 Mbs but we gritted our teeth & stuck with BT until 3 years ago when they announced an increase to £56 a month. A quick check discovered SSE providing the same facilities for £30 a month so we ditched BT and signed up with SSE. Fast forwards to 2003 and we upgraded to Norsenet to give us about 50 Mbs for £40 a month. We kept SSE landline/broadband as well because the contract didn't end until June 2024. Last week I signed up with Vonage who provide a VOIP phone link for £7 a month. So now for £47 a month we have a decent broadband link plus telephone connection via broadband. There is a slight kerfuffle about keeping our original telephone number but that's really a minor issue.
