Re: Southend
That section of road is now closed due to the runway extension with a few easyjet A319 and the odd A320 rattling along it as well as the odd ATR.
For the nostalgic one of the old Carvairs "Fat Annie" is being worked on in the USA and due to fly again any day now.

Re: Southend
That photo brings back 2 memories.
Did my first ever landing at Southend, in 1981!
Also did my first ever jet solo onto the short runway at Barkston Heath, which had the old Ermine Street in the undershoot. It was forbidden to students after an instructor bounced his wheels on the top of a furniture van on finals. It was also too strong a crosswind for students, and officially dark. Guess my instructor figured I needed a very good chance to kill myself, but, as ever, I let him down

Re: Southend
Spent quite a bit of time at Southend in the 80s, when the Viscounts were being broken up on the far side and the two then Heavylift owned Belfasts sat where I think the Vulcan is now.
Sadly, the photos I had have gone missing.

In the happy days when aviation and alcohol were an inseparable part of our lives, the Flarepath Club is a memory of the Southend aviation culture.
The Flarepath was the focal point for all job interviews, divorces, buying and selling cars, aircraft, anything, (often not exactly properly owned by the seller), outlandish stories, a place where people suddenly reappeared after months away, then off again.
Wish it was still like it.

Re: Southend
It still looks good Mole, an aviation wonder, how they could make something that looks so right so SLOW.
Re: Southend
Not called the 'Belslow' for nothing
om - was George White around in your time there and do you know if he is still around?

Re: Southend
Boac, and that AFTER the drag reducing measures.
Re: Southend
Yes. Having 'Lightning'd' into Neuberg airbase in the 70's on a squadron detachment I was 'Belslow'd' out in our support machine, and allowed 'up front' for the departure. "You may be surprised at the rate of climb" quoth the Capitano.
He was not kidding. I practically needed a change of Trolleys. I seem to recall less that 500fpm at full chat for a long time!
PS This is my entry in the August 'Thread Creep' challenge...........

Re: Southend
BOAC, yes if it is the same George White, CAA Surveyor at Southend in the early eighties, ex RAF engineering officer.
He took me for my Herald oral exam, and made me draw the flap cable system on a scrap of paper the size of a postage stamp using a felt tip pen.
I was down at Southend on a job a few weeks ago, caught up with the gossip, sadly the names are dropping off the radar these days.
