Re: Best and nicest and most clever and most fit-for-purpose designs
To get the discerning chief pilot's accolade, the Sikorsky S-76 Mark II must have been some machine. I took the liberty of finding out a bit more about the type.
Sikorsky S-76 Mark II
Still going strong.
The corporate version looks to be a good addendum to every successful billionaire's jet fleet but it still seems to be a good work horse too!

Agree with C16 100%. The S76 is great for corporate work and offshore work. The A+ that Bristow used to fly was a good machine but under-powered. The B that KLM used to operate was superbly equipped and had a great amount of reassuring power for those hot, heavy and windless days. Unfortunately it used a bit more fuel so went out of fashion but no doubt that has been fixed with later marks through to the D.

FD2, as those machines go, in flight it does look good. On the ground pick a little less so.

Woody, you might think that but I could not possibly comment.
Isn't it one of the helicopter principles of flight?

The 109 does look rather gorgeous though, doesn't she?
She looks likes she's doing 200kts, even on the ground.

Re: Best and nicest and most clever and most fit-for-purpose designs
Bit like an Italian sports car aren't they? Later Agusta machines like the 139 a little less pretty than the 109 but go like greased weasel ***** and lots of power too. My money's still on the 76 for looks and function though.Undried Plum wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 8:11 pmThe 109 does look rather gorgeous though, doesn't she?

Some 109 chopper porn for you UP! It is a smart little machine.
The SAS ones used to fly over our house at great speed on their way to or from Hereford in the 1990s.

Re: Best and nicest and most clever and most fit-for-purpose designs
Weren't two used by the SAS which were the spoils of war from the Falklands conflict? Or maybe they had been replaced by the 90's. A 109 went by here doing warp speed a couple of days ago. A very pretty machine.

C16 - Yes - the article says two courtesy of the Argentinians in the Falklands and another two bought, to bring total to four in 8 Flight altogether:

The only one I saw close up was on the ground at Norwich, being ground taxied at warp speed as well. Very Italian.

I wish I could remember the name and get a picture of a beautiful 4 seat twin jet I saw in a hangar at Bedford. Leather seats, smooth GRP wings, rear mounted engines, intakes about a hands width size.
Now that took my breath away.

Going completely away from aviation . The Gibson Les Paul guitar
Slightly annoying presenter, but some great examples

Doesn't quite sound like the Morane-Saulnier MS.760 Paris which used to be at Cranfield for years and had wing/fuselage mounted Turbomeca Marboré engines and 'normal' wings.PN wrote:I wish I could remember the name and get a picture of a beautiful 4 seat twin jet I saw in a hangar at Bedford. As thread starter I should have made clear, not just by example, that I meant aircraft.

Just possible and it might have been Cranfield, CAA examiners there?Boac wrote: ↑Fri Oct 22, 2021 12:04 pmDoesn't quite sound like the Morane-Saulnier MS.760 Paris which used to be at Cranfield for years and had wing/fuselage mounted Turbomeca Marboré engines and 'normal' wings.PN wrote:I wish I could remember the name and get a picture of a beautiful 4 seat twin jet I saw in a hangar at Bedford. The engines however were definitely podded and just a 4 seater though the back seats were full of instruments. The front seats were light tan leather, contoured, and fixed position. Looked really comfortable.
