Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

I can't remember the name of it but the dentist said there was a little used tool available which was hollow and drilled around the post. He didn't have one as he said they cost around £2,000 and were prone to break, causing more problems. He said he will use a strong cement to embed the post and a ...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

Dental appointment this afternoon to fit a replacement post crown. I managed to snap the metal post in the 15 year old crown three weeks ago, leaving half in my jaw, and it took nearly an hour for the dentist to get the remains of the old post removed, first by using ultrasonics to break up the ceme...

Re: Spatial disorientation - S92 night rig take off

Excellent explanations, Boac - better than I could do! Without a simulator part of our IMC base check included unusual attitude recovery whilst behind screens and keeping your eyes closed until the Training Captain finished his manoeuvring. A very worthwhile exercise and especially challenging if he...

Re: Spatial disorientation - S92 night rig take off

On my last type - 24 years ago - there wasn't a simulator in existence so on the airfield on an IMC base check under screens it was usual for the Training Captain to visually hover the helicopter and then hand over control to the candidate who then carried out a ‘night’ departure on instruments as h...

Spatial disorientation - S92 night rig take off

From the Aberdeen Press & Journal 16 February 2024 CLOSE CALL: A Bristow S-92 helicopter, similar to the one involved in the incident. . S92.jpg Pilots flying from an oil rig in the North Sea lost control of their helicopter for 40 seconds, air accident investigators have found. The Bristow S-92, wh...

That's a hell of a lot of helicopters in a small area!

Steve Wright at the age of 69 - probably the best BBC Radio 2 presenter. Really enjoyed his programmes over many years.

Now here's a proper Procedure Alpha - HMS Victorious circa 1962. It had the experimental bridle catcher on the port cat which was removed after one commission.

I am in the process of renewing my licence so I might just follow your lead.
DVLA don't wait to see if you have actually sent back your old licence cut in half - I only posted that to them late afternoon on Friday.

No official statement about the delay but PoW is on her way at last....fingers crossed. Why no 'Procedure Alpha'?

Re: Octopus Agile electricity tariff UK

Without very much effort the Octopus Agile tariff seems to work well for us - just the two of us, home most days. Here's a breakdown of 7 days - 3 days on the previous standard variable tariff and four days on the Agile tariff. The photo is a page from a third party app called Octopus Watch. Very us...

Bristow crews vote for strike action - shades of 1977?

From the Aberdeen Press & Journal: Helicopter crews at Bristow have voted “overwhelmingly” to take industrial action in a long-running dispute over pay. The British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) has confirmed more than 96% of its members who took part in a ballot backed going on strike after mo...

Re: Octopus Agile electricity tariff UK

Yes, I’ll ask them in the morning. We cook on a camping stove during power cuts and I can keep the freezers cold during longer cuts by plugging them into the car for an hour or two a day. Worked well a while back when we had a 4 day cut.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V

The snow here disappeared a week ago but today, after the existing one snapped, I put in a new auger belt in my snowblower and it’s up and running. That’s a sure sign we won’t get any more snow this season.

Re: Octopus Agile electricity tariff UK

Being rural my heating is oil but we’re electric cooking. The dishwasher and washing machine can be set to a delay start, as can charging the car.

Re: Octopus Agile electricity tariff UK

My understanding is that once they issue prices for the following day they honour them. I’ve looked at daily Agile prices for about the last 12 months and the highest rate was roughly 40p during the 16-1900 period. The average was way below what I’m paying at the moment. My only real concern is that...

Octopus Agile electricity tariff UK

I had a smart meter installed last week and am now tempted by the Octopus Agile electricity tariff where half hourly prices for the following day are issued around 1600 each day. Historically for the last year or so the tariff would have saved me money. I don't do enough miles to make the Octopus Go...
