Well done, John -recycling at its best!
Thank you.

When you live in a small town at the end of the world innovation is something learned right after being weaned from mother's breasts. However I must say that nowadays Beijing is practically closer than Orkland.

I thought I should make something today...

We have a couple of MS Flight Simulator set ups at our museum where unsupervised visitors (i.e. children) can have a play. Unfortunately the usual plastic joysticks and flight yokes have a very low life expectancy in this environment.. So I thought I might try to make something that would be more ro...

Re: Nostalgia: Whatever happened to railroad dining cars?

I am afraid that NZ does not have a strong heritage of railway dining cars, some but not many. Instead we had an abysmal system of 'refreshment rooms'. Every 50 miles or so the locomotive would take on water while the passengers jostled each other at the counter to get a mug of tea and a 'piece' (pi...

Re: Nostalgia: Whatever happened to railroad dining cars?

The lake steamer at Queenstown NZ is no longer operated by the Railways (several decades now) and no longer carries mobs of sheep on deck but they do do a reasonable service taking tourists across the lake to enjoy dinner at the old Walter Peak homestead on the other side. If you happen to be on the...

Re: Nostalgia: Whatever happened to railroad dining cars?

I have always enjoyed rail journeys, Perth to Adelaide (1969), Montreal to Vancouver (1986) especially remembered, maybe Adelaide to Darwin one day. The hotel in Pyongyang had the usual display at reception which showed the connections available to far away places including a train leaving every Tue...

Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

Well, my job is about finding things and typing fast, so I've managed so far. Typing eh! I used to be a reasonable typist although being teletype trained I could stumble a bit on the punctuation! Not so good nowadays as computer keyboards have far too many keys and of course the keyboard is always ...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI

The postman called this morning with a little parcel from China, oh goody! I opened the parcel and immediately tried one fitted to an ESP32 micro widget but no joy! These were ordered thinking they were RGB sensors but really they are light intensity sensors and can also sense movement, for example ...

Just 19.

But I have used punched cards and a teleprinter.
Ah, but have you used a Holerith punch to punch the cards?
If you need more cards I still have the print drum for mass producing them.

Re: Electric Cars II - Not Silly!

Carjam tells me mine is NZ assembled, country of origin Japan. Were they imported CKD? edit to add: Carjam says mine's a 5-gear manual and it's not, it's automatic, so what do they know anyway! 8-| I do not think the were complete kits and a considerable percentage (maybe 30%) was NZ content, items...

No, it's a Nissan. 294,300-some kms :)
Nissan Bluebirds were assembled in NZ and it is quite possible the name changes did not happen at exactly the same time as elsewhere.

Amusing though the conversation near the Harrier was it was nothing compared to what I hear near the RR Nene/Derwent engine and our Mig 17!

Re: The Queen's Flight

Of course I have not yet received the Queen's Flight model so I am very chuffed at these glowing opinions people here have of their work. My incentive for creating this exhibit is to somewhat offset the creeping ingress of Uncle Sam tat in to our museum. I hope I can make something worthy with this ...

As for Springfield, it seems that a lot of the residents are eating at Haitian restaurants as a show of support.

I do not think I could convince myself that I should add a VC10 to our museum exhibits.
