Re: Millions of us might be **** if we ignore the Russian-Ukraine war

Ah yes, baba yaga. Used to keep many a Russian child in check! I remember there used to be a cartoon on Russian TV featuring the witch, and one of the interpreters I worked with told me that they frightened her daughter to death!

Re: Spitfire Crash

I can't help wondering how much longer these old warbirds will be allowed to fly before a ban is put in place. Sadly, there seems to be at least one a year currently, and whilst I have no doubt that, especially in the case of the BBMF aircraft, they are meticulously maintained, sooner or later they ...

I see that the prices, as one might expect, are ridiculous.

Re: Not TOO soft, I hope.......

As a slight aside, the Russian word for helicopter is вертолёт, pronounced 'vertalyot'. Since Russian is an old language, there were no words for flying machines, so one was invented by Nikolay Kamov of Kamov Helicopters during a meeting in February 1929. The word comprises two other words, верте́ть...

Very nice John. Clearly a lot of work has gone into refurbishing and maintaining those exhibits, and it shows. Simply curiosity, not criticism, but why the short opening hours? Getting volunteers to cover can be a challenge in a small town but it is something we should review. We can be somewhat fl...

Strewth - it's been a long time since I last saw a packet of those. Yes, the word ubiquitous was coined to describe them, On sale wherever you went, and very cheap they were, too. Had a very distinct aroma, apparently made from Georgian and Turkish tobacco. They were not very well packed, and the st...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.

Mine are all relatively close, but my primary methods to solve the groceries problems are copied from my mother back in the '70s. I've bought the biggest freezer I have space for, grow a veggie garden, and got better/more adventurous at cooking. I will be using the mangoes to make my own chutney. T...

Re: Rant of the Day v2.

You mean you no longer get Green Shield Stamps ? When I was working in the paper industry, I was at a paper mill in Kent one day, when a convoy of lorries turned up, led by two police cars. I was in another part of the mill with the head papermaker, when he was called to the pulping unit. He said, ...

It seems that a week before he was shot on 15 May, Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Azerbaijan and met with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on 7 May. Also, the Crocus venue in Moscow is part-Azerbaijani owned.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI

I admit that feeding birds is 'entertainment' for the dozen people that I live with (in sheltered accommodation). In addition to the usual sparrows, tits and starlings (greedy beggars), we have had nuthatches (for the peanuts) - and grey squirrels (for both seeds and nuts). Excess human food (bread...

Many moons ago, in the days of Orion Airways, I was in a house share with one of their f/os at LGW. He told me the story of how one day, they had made two attempts to land at FNC, but as a result of crosswinds and windshear, they had diverted to the nearby island of Porto Santo, with the intention o...

Re: FUN chal

There's a channel on YouTube which streams live action from FNC most days. Seldom are the days when there isn't a significant crosswind. I know GIB can be difficult, but the incidences of wind shear seem to be more frequent and serious at FNC.
