Re: Rant of the Day v2.

Got behind on Stuff NZ quizzes by a few days and went back to catch up. Quizzes open OK (3 different browsers but require to "Choose" after making one's selection. ~X( Nil progress thereafter. ^! Latest quizzes work normally without requiring one to choose after selection. :-?? PP Revisited then qu...

English as she is spoke: following investigations, I have now learned who a "Gammon" might be.

- as far as the meat by that name is concerned, I knew what that was but I don't think I've ever seen the word used here, only rarely in British recipe-books.

We 'ave 'am 'ere...

I travelled to New Zealand to see Comet Halley.

It was fainter than I expected - I anticipated a firework in the sky.
Ya, I hoped for a repeat of something like Comet Ikeya–Seki

but even so was a thrill to see Halley.

Wasn't Pons-Brooks a Cardinal who was passed over during the Papal Elections in the 'sixties ? The Rev Jim might know.... Comet Pons-Brooks was conclusively discovered at Marseilles Observatory in July 1812 by Jean-Louis Pons, and on its next appearance in 1883 by William Robert Brooks. Wikipedia: ...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI

Well that was a surprise: all ready to start my day, came into the living room, switched off lights, opened curtains, all very dark still. Realised there's still about half an hour till sunrise :D 2.8°C expecting 14°C, possibly. - did anyone see the Comet Pons-Brooks in the skies recently? I think I...

Re: We need more

Colour films are insanely rare in the 1920s, which makes this 26-part travelogue of the UK exceptional. Filmed in 1924 by Claude Friese-Greene using his father's colour process invention, I've edited a preview for Twitter, but it is now available on DVD, restored by the BFI 2:15 video with glimpses...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread VI

Noticed today that all my framed pictures on the walls had gone crooked, and one tedious little ornament, which falls over if you look at it, had fallen over, so have completed a Felt Report for the nearest earthquake. It *may* have awoken me at the time, can't remember.

Good morning: some sunshine earlier but cloud arrived and descends; some drizzle - the kind that is so fine one wonders whether it's just static before the eyes, but I see rainwater dribbling from the neighbour's spouting; 5.5°C, 88% humidity; heatpump running in living-room and a heater on a thermo...
