.....despite the mess they do seem to have done very nice job. There is always going to be a bit of a mess given the type of materials being used. As long as they do the clearing up I would be happy with that job. The real test will be your first rainstorm.

On my last visit the hell hole I took madame over the creek on one of the little bum boats and sat as near as I could get to the water with SWMBO asking "Why are we here??" Behind us it was skyscrapery and a 4 lane dual carriage-way heaving with traffic. I was able to say that 40 years before, to th...

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral
Having had a closer look at the ringed leg in the middle of the tray/platform - maybe someone is missing a racing pigeon?
"I hear that Cedric bought it this afternoon chaps, we'll raise a glass to him tonight" stiff upper lip and all that.

I too think we should have a Traab VI.
I think Kararea should run it, a sensible, sensitive woman. (no disrespect to the current team)

The chicks are at the stage that all comparable young'uns are. Eat, sh1t, sleep. Their outer wing feathers are beginning to show and the "fluff" is slowly disappearing. Fascinating watch.

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral
They serpently are! The parent can't cover all four now to keep them warm at night. I see there is another webcam at a big building in Glasgow, the Gilbert Scott tower, with four peregrine chicks. They are proposing to abseil to the nest (which is a big proper nest) to electronically tag the chicks ...

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
That is what happens in medical schools today but in the '50s in Aberdeen (Scotland)medical school two students shared a cadaver and took it apart themselves. So they were finding their way around, say, the path of the vagus nerve so the results were not pretty. The prof of anatomy always insisted t...

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
In the '50s in Scotland you also had to be a "bona fide" traveller to be served a drink. And you had to sign the "bona fide travellers register" which had interesting entries such as "Athens Greece to Athens Missouri"**, and in one that I read "from the cradle to the grave". Oh what fun we had we bl...

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral
How can one reliably tell the male and the female apart? My Observer book of birds is not terribly helpful in this regard. I've been tending to assume that the one that is visible most of the time is the hen as I've only occasionally seen another bird appear with a kill. I'm sure she's aware of the ...

Re: Peregrine falcons at Worcester Cathedral
My aren't they growing quickly! Right now the "parent" (sex unknown) is sounding really cross and shouting at the other "get a bloody move on and catch something to eat". It did the same yesterday evening, got no reply, left the nest and came back in about two minutes with what looked a blackbird si...
