Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
I learned to drive at Uni - self-taught- as my girlfriend at the time didn't want to drive her mini 200-odd miles back to London on snowy roads. So I did it. Then my housemate, also an RAF pilot, would have me drive back from Leeming up the A1 while he got some snooze-time. I would steer from the pa...

Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
Didn't pass my car test till 30, paid for by the RAF via the Education Grant, in order to drive the Squadron minibus at Akrotiri. Thus my entire Service driving experience was four weeks in the sun with the wheel in one hand and an ice cream in the other. Had spent the previous 8 years getting a car...

Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
Exactly. I'd like the benefits of modern engine economy (i.e. up to about 2008) but not the electronic/complex injection boll#cks I'm seriously considering getting an old Arizona truck (they never rust) that'll take a modern-ish engine, and the rest can go hang. I will fit an aftermarket remote start...

Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
Now I would also consider the leasing option, for the reasons you state and because any new vehicle, with all the current complexity/non-fixability, is a disaster waiting to happen. Leasing deals have got a lot better in the last 5 years, I believe. Except I've never needed a new car and can't find ...

Re: Invasion of Europe
The great unwashed tend not to take to the streets. They tend to start causing mayhem once they are already on the streets, due to bread queues, unemployment, or homelessness. These conditions are now starting.

Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
' Fargo ' will teach you all you need to know about car salesmen...... I have never bought a new car. I have been supplied with a new car once - company car - it broke on the drive home. The only dealers I have dealt with have come on a personal recommendation. Every one of those dealers told me wha...

Re: Slimy patronising car salesmen.
A former colleague of mine (UK) has recently switched from VW almost solely because of the patronising attitude she got from the dealership, whether Sales or Service departments, over the last eight years. She now drives a Nissan Juke. When you look at the salary/rewards/T&Cs for most motor indu...

Re: Invasion of Europe
Essentially, most of the Western Nations have not had a leader, or indeed a significant number of politicians, who have been capable for the last 15 years at least. They have come up through a system which rewards political nous and places no value on actual ability. A very large number of them have...

Re: Invasion of Europe
The Russian methodology in Arabia is pretty much 'no holds barred'. There is a significant chance they will have ISIS on the ropes in a couple of months, which is going to make the Western nations look (correctly) useless. In fact, I doubt Putin would have got involved if he didn't intend to make th...

Re: Aviation / Aircraft Question
Water injection is in fact deliberately used to increase the thrust in hot and/or high conditions, or short runways/high MTOW. This may be injected into the compressor fan or directly into the diffuser in front of the combustion chamber. The Harrier is an example. There's a fair bit of spare capacit...
